Interim/Gap Year Program for Pre-College and College Students

A Longé Interim program or GapYear offers young adults a hands-on educational environment ideal for exploring another world view. Longé is a bridge to the Kalinago community, to opportunities that will broaden hearts and minds, foster independence and interdependence, and encourage self-knowledge. Longé immerses young adults into new landscapes and new perspectives that will increase understanding of others, develop leadership skills and offer connections that will span cultural and geographic differences.

Spending a semester or two living communally, volunteering at Crayfish River Preschool, St. Cyr Health Clinic, or developing programs with or through the Committee of Concerned Women engages participants in every aspect of the Territory. Deep within the rhythm of day-to day life, relationships are formed and nurtured. Day trips, weekend excursions and other cultural adventures further enhance appreciation of the geographical and social contexts of life in this unique region.

Summer Leadership Program for Young Adults

Longé offers a cohort of twenty young adults (half residents of Kalinago community and half from other countries) a five-week immersion experience blending leadership development and service work over two consecutive summers. The Kalinago community in Dominica serves as host the first summer when non-Kalinago participants will rely on the experience and strengths, derived from their indigenous upbringing, of the Kalinago young adults. During these first five weeks, all participants will create an action plan together, including but not limited to meal planning, identifying service projects, and planning exploration and adventure gatherings. Goals will be established for the group at large. And each individual will establish goals for himself or herself. In regularly planned session, individuals will reflect on their experiences and achievements.

Longé Dominica participants also will engage in communication skills and conflict resolution workshops with guidance from four Longé staff, all of whom bring solid leadership and development experience within the context of the Kalinago community.

During the second summer, the same 20 young adults will re-unite but in another location or country, with the aim once again of creating a living and learning community. Participants again will create an action plan, set goals and reflect on achievements and, in addition, will look to the future and begin outlining specific strategies for how they intend to impact their local-global communities once they return home.

Eligibility Requirements
Individuals must be between 18 and 30 years of age at departure and must have graduated from high school or have a GED equivalent. Individuals must demonstrate, through the application and interview process, their flexibility, maturity, adaptability, curiosity and readiness to meet the challenges of living and learning in a unique culture in an under-resourced community.
