We are Emma and Dave, two interns who completed our work in April 2008. We
were working with teachers from Salybia Primary School and the Special Needs
School to increase educational opportunities for students and adults alike.
From discussions with our school partners and from our observations, we
identified a way we were able to help build on the current education
experience provided for Kalinago community members. In partnership with
Salybia Primary faculty, we helped create an internet-enabled Computer
Resource Center housed in Salybia Primary and open on weekends and in the
evenings for adults. Currently, the only public access to computers or
technology skills enhancement classes for the Kalinago community is a costly
hour bus ride away. Our goal was to bring that opportunity closer to them.
We relied on laptop and monetary donations to get this project started. To
date, 7 laptops and $1600 USD was raised. The Center is open with community
and school faculty acting as the Board of Directors and a few Kalinago young
adults volunteering their time to run the Center and maintain the computers.
Our hope for the future is to increase both the number of laptops and the
funding that will help get this Center established more permanently until an
stable income is generated through modest computer class fees for adults.
